It looks like it is going to continue to be a challenging time economically in 2009, so let's all do what we can to lend a helping hand to those around us who need it – throughout the year. Taking care of one another (those we know AND those we DON'T know) is the key to many of the best things in life.
One of the main things that has been reinforced for me during 2008 is that when you help someone out – even in a very small way – it can make ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD TO THEM. So look around you in 2009 and truly help those who need it; however you can…unexpected help can do so much that is good. To those who already lend a hand…know how special you are. If possible, try not to let the challenges we face as a Nation or a World interfere with the help that you give. Also – remember that so much of the support we give to others does not have to be financial…though there is always a place for that when possible.
Here are some helping ideas for you to consider as we move into the New Year…
– help a friend or stanger with a family emergency by being there for them
– listen to someone who needs nothing other than to be heard
– shovel a walkway or path for a neighbour
- rake leaves for someone who needs the help
– pay for someone who is behind you at the checkout or drive through
– help someone who is moving by babysitting, lending a hand or a truck
– donate your blood, time or energy where it is really needed
– babysit for parents who need a break
– link your blog to someone who is new to blogging or a cause that could really benefit from your support and traffic
– deliver blankets and warm clothing that you know longer need to a homeless shelter or area where there are many homeless people (i.e. Downtown East Side of Vancouver)
– plant some extra rows in your garden this spring and then donate the results to the local foodbank
– volunteer for a local community program
– become a big brother or big sister or a foster grandparent
– teach someone to read
- open your home to a foster child who may really need the love and stability that your family can offer
– read to young children who need a reading role model
– refer someone who needs it to local community services – food bank, financial counselling etc. Even better, voluteer at local community agencies by working, driving, phoning, supporting etc.
– make a meal or two for a family who are facing a serious illness
– donate whatever you no longer need to a charity thrift store, shelter or family who really need your support
May the dawn of 2009 mean many things to you…health, happiness, peace, friendship, prosperity and anything else that is important to the wellbeing of you and your family. I send warm wishes to all of my friends, family, colleagues and clients for a happy, healthy and peaceful 2009.
