Remember the story of the PEI parents who were fighting to get their children's Kindergarten fees covered? Well here is the answer they received late last week from Premier Ghiz.
Unfortunately, we are not in a position to alter the kindergarten
funding policy as it now stands. I agree with your statement that we
must keep the best interests of our children in mind as we make our
decisions. However, it is government’s responsibility to consider the
best interests of all Island children. A change in policy would place
existing kindergarten facilities at a disadvantage and risk significant
financial consequences both to them and to the Province. Given that
kindergarten will be moving into the school system in September, 2010, a
change is simply not feasible.
This is simply amazing to me. WHEN will the PEI government start truly putting the needs of children and families BEFORE the needs of the system?
"…a change is simply not feasible." I disagree, a change was and is feasible. This was an opportunity to create a defining moment in PEI related to the early years.
