The Commissioner for Children is an independent office responsible to the Parliament of Tasmania. In essence, the Commissioner's functions include promoting the rights and well-being of children
along with examining the policies, practices and services provided for
children and any laws affecting the health, welfare, care, protection
and development of children. These functions are very broad and there
is consequently a need to focus on matters that will make a real
difference to the lives of children in Tasmania especially those more
vulnerable children and young people.
Since July 2008, every State and Territory has either a Children's
Commissioner or a Guardian of Children in Government care. For more
