A group of Island parents today is demanding that government put a hold on changes to child care legislation that would limit the total number of licensed child care facilities.
A new, additional public meeting on the topic hosted by the provincial government is set for tomorrow, Wed, Feb. 27 between 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express on the TransCanada Highway in Charlottetown.
Under existing law, a new child care facility must be given a license if all regulations are met. Proposed changes would set a limit on the total number of child care facilities allowed to be open at any one time.
A public consultation process was followed earlier this month but many people said the issue itself and the public meetings passed them by before the impact of the changes could be contemplated.
What started on Facebook as a protest group opposed to the changes has now adopted the formal name of Parents for Choice and Quality and has it’s own blog.
On the blog today the group issued its request that more time be allowed so that “a more comprehensive review of the issues and their potential impact on this critically important matter can take place. This would include a more authentic community consultation process .
