In recent blog postings I have been suggesting that it is time for the Province of Prince Edward Island to develop a comprehensive strategy for the early years. Such a strategy would be one that addresses, supports and invests in all aspects of development, education and health outcomes for young children on PEI. It would not just be a document that sits on a shelf, but a strategy that truly comes to life – at the family level, at the community level and at the government level. Yes, a comprehensive child care and early learning system is be part of such a strategy, but it is important to remember that access to quality child care and early learning programs is just one piece of what is needed to ensure Island children grow up to be happy, healthy, literate and ready to take on the challenges of tomorrow. There is much more that also needs to be addressed.
Over the next little while I am going to be providing examples of comprehensive, stategic plans (and related documents) that address the early years through this blog. I have added a new category that I will place all of these postings under. It is called - Early Years Strategies. Please check back regularly as I will try and update the information under this section on a regular basis for the next while.
